Jutep decided to evaluate the details of the transaction after receiving several anonymous complaints.
It will evaluate today the complaints against Uruguayan President Yamandú Orsi regarding the purchase of a private truck at a $25,000 discount.
Jutep President Ana María Ferraris said that the agency is giving “absolute priority” to the investigation, which will be officially debated in a session scheduled for June 5.
The controversy centers on whether the financial benefit received by the president in purchasing the electric vehicle constitutes any type of preferential treatment or conflict of interest.
As part of the payment for the Hyundai Santa Fe truck, the president handed over a vehicle that had been donated to the Broad Front during the last election campaign.
Orsi released a video this week defending his actions, though he said he would apologize if necessary.
On Tuesday, he met with journalists from four media outlets and shared documentation on the matter.
He finally announced that he would donate the vehicle, a Hyundai Santa Fe SUV, to the National Public Education Administration.
With this, the governor considered the matter closed, a matter exacerbated by the opposition, particularly in Parliament, and pending the Transparency and Public Ethics Board’s (JUTEP) verdict.
