Remittances to Guatemala grew 7.5 percent through May

Guatemala City, Jun 6 (Prensa Latina) Remittances to Guatemala continue their positive trend, increasing 7.5 percent through May compared to the same period last year, reaching $10.653 billion.

In May of this year, $2.2214 billion arrived, representing a 3.7 percent increase compared to April, although 2.6 percent lower than the same period in 2025, the country’s Central Bank reported.

Family remittances to Guatemala reached $2.4418 billion in March, a new record high surpassing the previous record set in October 2025.

In January, the figure was $1.9547 billion, in February $1.8939 billion, and in April $2.141 billion, according to the same source.

In 2024, this Central American country reported remittance income of $21.51 billion, a figure surpassed by the end of December with $25.53 billion, an increase of 18.7 percent.

The Central Bank emphasized that Guatemala has doubled the amount of remittances received in the five years since 2019, when it received $10.5083 billion.

It ruled out a contraction in the short term and estimated a further increase by 2026, reaching between $25.747 billion and $26.8 billion.

Guatemala leads Central America in this sector and is second in Latin America, after Mexico, with the Dominican Republic in third and Colombia in fourth.

Foreign exchange income from remittances is a fundamental pillar for the projected growth of the gross domestic product, estimated at 4.1 percent by the end of this year.

The jump to 20 percent of total economic contribution reflects a growing dependence on this sector to sustain household consumption (approximately 65 million people, 1.7 million households, according to official estimates).
