Thanks to the initiative of journalist Cesar Garcia Exposito, the commemoration had its origin in 1950 and is celebrated every June 7 in honor of the birthday of journalist and historian Antonio Bachiller y Morales, who was considered the father of bibliography in Cuba.
However, it was officially established in 1981 to honor not only editors and writers, but also those who contribute to the cultural and scientific development of the country.
Beyond managing collections, Cuban librarians act as mediators between people and knowledge, thus guaranteeing equitable access to information, promoting reading, and preserving documentary heritage.
Although the profession has earlier pioneering figures, this date highlights the modernization and expansion of the library system in Cuba.
