Colombian President to attend UN Security Council session

Bogota, Jun 9 (Prensa Latina) President Gustavo Petro will travel to the United Nations headquarters in New York to attend a Security Council session, whose presidency Colombia holds during this month.

The Security Council is reportedly scheduled to hold a high-level open debate on the situation in the Middle East, which Petro will lead to address global peace, international law, and respect for international law.

According to reports, the head of State would attend the “Dignity in Democracy” summit to discuss the rise of inequality, the power of elites, and the strengthening of democratic institutions.

A meeting between Petro and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, which New York City Commissioner of International Affairs Ana Maria Archila, was born in Colombia, had helped to coordinate, was also announced, as part of his participation in the event.

The Foreign Ministry informed that Colombia, as the president of the Security Council, will lead the body’s formal and informal meetings, coordinate its monthly work program, and boost an agenda focused on peace, multilateralism, the peaceful settlement of disputes, and the defense of international law.
