Mexican President reaffirms continued aid to Cuba

Mexico City, June 9 (Prensa Latina) Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum reaffirmed her country's commitment to continue sending aid to Cuba, which is under siege from the intensified economic, commercial, financial, and energy blockade imposed by the United States.

“We continue to send aid of all kinds, and we will continue to do so,” the president asserted in response to a question about recent statements by Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel, in which he thanked Mexico for its support.

During her regular press conference, the president described this as a matter of solidarity.

“The people of Mexico have always done this, and we will continue to do so, because it is a people who need it,” she declared.

For more than six decades, the United States has maintained an economic, commercial, and financial embargo against Cuba, which was tightened last January through an executive order signed by US President Donald Trump.

The resulting lack of access to fuel affects critical sectors such as electricity generation, hospital operations, food production and distribution, and water pumping in the Caribbean nation.

The threats from the Republican president—who has said that upon returning from Iran, Washington will make “a brief stop” on the island—and other measures against Cuba have sparked rejection and condemnation from popular sectors, governments, and politicians in Mexico and other nations around the world.
