Death toll from Philippines earthquake rises to 55

Manila, Jun 12 (Prensa Latina) The death toll in the Philippines from the recent 7.8 magnitude earthquake rose to 55, while the number of injured reached 1,120, an official source reported.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council confirmed that the earthquake affected more than 33,000 homes, leaving nearly 150,000 people homeless, and displaced more than 41,000 residents.

Authorities in the southern Philippines reported damage to 238 infrastructure projects, including hospitals, schools, and bridges, as well as some 3,000 homes.

The provinces of Sarangani and South Cotabato, along with the city of General Santos, were the hardest hit, accounting for the majority of victims and damage.

According to the agency, the deaths were mainly due to landslides, drownings, and debris flows.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology specified that the tectonic earthquake had its epicenter 32 km southwest of Maasim, in Sarangani, at a depth of 33 km, and has since recorded thousands of aftershocks.
