In a press conference, reported by the semi-official Fars news agency, Baghaei explained that, according to international law, the Strait of Hormuz lies within the territorial waters shared by Iran and Oman, and therefore both states exercise sovereign rights over this waterway.
“We must receive compensation for the services provided in the Strait of Hormuz,” the spokesman, who defended Tehran’s position regarding the management and security of the maritime passage, declared.
Baghaei maintained that the United States and Israel have exploited the situation in the Strait of Hormuz through threats and actions against Iran, which, in his view, gives the Islamic Republic the authority to take measures related to this strategic area.
According to the official, any initiative aimed at guaranteeing the security of the Strait of Hormuz would be welcomed by the international community, given the importance of the route for energy supplies and global trade.
Regarding the negotiations between Iran and the United States, the spokesman stated that Tehran maintains a cautious stance and noted that his country does not base its decisions on Washington’s acceptance or rejection.
