Prensa Latina marks 67th founding anniversary

Havana, Jun 16 (Prensa Latina) The Latin American News Agency Prensa Latina (PL) marks its 67th anniversary on Tuesday, having established itself as one of the longest-running and most far-reaching news projects to emerge in Latin America during the 20th century.

Founded in this capital in 1959 at the initiative of then-Cuban Prime Minister Fidel Castro and Commander Ernesto “Che” Guevara, PL featured the legacy of Argentine journalist Jorge Ricardo Masetti, who was its first director and established its correspondent offices.

Prensa Latina, since its inception, has developed an information structure with a presence in multiple regions of the world and currently maintains correspondents in more than 30 countries and a network of contributors in Latin America, the Caribbean, Europe, Africa, and Asia, enabling it to provide a continuous flow of information on international, regional, and local events.

The news agency has reported on significant international events throughout its history, including political processes in Latin America, armed conflicts such as the Vietnam War, national liberation movements in Africa, multilateral summits, global economic crises, health emergencies, and large-scale sporting events.

At the regional level, it has systematically monitored Latin American integration processes, political transitions, and contemporary social dynamics.

Journalism experts have noted that Prensa Latina has established itself as a leading news source within the Spanish-language media landscape, highlighting its regional coverage and permanence in a highly competitive environment.
