Brazil’s STF opens trial against former congressman Eduardo Bolsonaro

Brasilia, Jun 16 (Prensa Latina) Brazil's Supreme Federal Court (STF) begins on Tuesday the trial against former congressman Eduardo Bolsonaro, accused of boosting actions from the United States to pressure national authorities and influence proceedings related to the coup plot.

The case will be heard by the First Chamber of the Supreme Court, composed of Justices Ministers Alexandre de Moraes, Flavio Dino, Cristiano Zanin, and Carmen Lucia.

Eduardo Bolsonaro, son of former president Jair Bolsonaro, faces criminal charges filed by the Attorney General’s Office (PGR), which accuses him of coordinating contacts and lobbying in US territory to promote sanctions on STF ministers and economic measures that would harm Brazil.

The investigation was opened in May 2025, when Eduardo Bolsonaro was already living in the United States.

The indictment noted that the former congressman acted alongside journalist Paulo Figueiredo to mobilize political support among authorities and allies of the US Government to punish members of the Brazilian judiciary and increase pressure on national institutions.

The Folha de S. Paulo newspaper stated that the charges against the former congressman include coercion during legal proceedings, obstruction of an investigation by a criminal organization, attempted abolition of the democratic rule of law, and attacks on national sovereignty.
