Tax cuts purchases abroad via website by Uruguayans

Montevideo, Jun 16 (Prensa Latina) Uruguayans today buy less online abroad, a consequence associated with the collection of value added tax (VAT) that began to be applied in May.

The National Customs Directorate (DNA) reported that that month 112,355 web purchases were made abroad, less than half of the 252,574 registered in April.

The cut occurs after the first month of the implementation of modifications provided in the Budget for the international parcel regime, in particular purchases via Temu, the Chinese online store.

Online purchases from the United States also varied.

The measures discouraged buyers who in the previous month had made the all-time high of transactions since the beginning of the franchise more than a decade ago.

The figure for May of this year was the lowest since October 2024 when 115,206 transactions had been carried out. Last year culminated in almost two million web purchases.

Clothing and textile manufactures dominated, followed by toys, games and recreational items; furniture and household items; electrical machines, devices and material, among others.

The Budget approved at the end of last year includes changes to the franchise regime. The text states that the merchandise arriving through this route will have an annual limit of 800 dollars (instead of the current 600) and can be distributed in three operations per year.

Web purchases abroad still do not pay import duties, but must pay VAT (22 percent). The maximum weight per operation continues to be 20 kilograms.
