Michelle Bachelet’s UN candidacy gains new support

Santiago, Chile, Jun 17 (Prensa Latina) The candidacy of former Chilean President Michelle Bachelet for Secretary-General of the United Nations continues to gain support, following the endorsement of the Progressive Alliance of the Americas (APLA).

The organization highlighted, in a statement released in this capital, her political career and leadership in international affairs.

The group noted that the former president served, within the United Nations system itself, as executive director of UN Women and High Commissioner for Human Rights, among other positions.

During her two terms as the president of Chile (2006-2010 and 2014-2018), Bachelet promoted multilateralism as a State policy, added the alliance, which brings together more than 20 political parties and progressive organizations from 12 countries in the region.

The Partido Socialista (Socialist Party-PS) and the Partido por la Democracia (Party for Democracy) are part of that coalition in Chile.

Bachelet’s candidacy for the highest multilateral organization was presented in September 2025 during the government of former President Gabriel Boric.

However, current far-right President Jose Antonio Kast decided to withdraw his support.
