Cuba: Defending the socialist homeland is a priority

Havana, Jun 19 (Prensa Latina) Cuban Prime Minister Manuel Marrero affirmed that defending the socialist homeland is the priority, as he presented reforms impacting the country's statistical system, control mechanisms, and legal framework.

In the Third Extraordinary Session of the National Assembly, Marrero presented a series of proposals, including the design of a statistical system adapted to economic and social transformations, the completion of the change to the base year for the National Accounts, and the development of producer price and foreign trade indices.

As on control and inspection, he proposed creating a working group, led by the Central Committee of the Party and composed of representatives from various institutions, to analyze current legislation and propose reforms.

The head of government emphasized that the transformations do not imply relinquishing the State’s social responsibility, but rather recognize market mechanisms as efficient instruments for resource allocation. He specified that 76 percent of the measures are fully aligned with the 2026 Government Program.

He also stated that, as needed, preliminary modifications will be analyzed to define risks and mitigate negative impacts.

In other words, he noted, this proposal is not rigid; control will be maintained throughout the implementation process, and corrective actions will be taken, along with a learning system for key officials and executives.

“These transformations do not mean wiping out the socialist project; on the contrary, they respond to the inherent logic of its development. Cuba is in the historical period of building socialism,” Marrero affirmed.
