Cuba: Vulnerable families at the center of social change

Havana, Jun 19 (Prensa Latina) Support for children without parental care and assistance for vulnerable families are among the proposals for social transformation in Cuba, presented at an Extraordinary Session of the National Assembly of People's Power.

In listing the initiatives, Cuban Prime Minister Manuel Marrero emphasized that all economic actors, both state and private, national and foreign, must participate directly in supporting pensioners through agreements with banks as part of their social responsibility at the community level.

He also mentioned supporting family assistance programs and community food centers, as well as digitizing and making the management of aid more transparent through the use of the Soberania platform for real-time updates of the registry of vulnerable individuals and families, in order to systematize their care, traceability, and governmental and public oversight.

Focused on overcoming the current circumstances, Marrero stressed on the need to strengthening social work with a proactive and preventative approach, starting with prioritizing its role in research.

This also includes providing small-scale assets for the development of non-state activities to people in situations of multidimensional vulnerability, as a way to enter the workforce and overcome this condition.

It also involves designing educational training, postgraduate, cultural, and other selected services that constitute sources of income for the social sector, as well as establishing differentiated rates for childcare and semi-boarding services, based on family income.

Another proposal for social change is to outline tax benefits for workshops employing people with disabilities, with the aim of increasing workers’ income.
