The criticism comes after statements made yesterday by President Donald Trump, who asserted in a threatening tone that Cuba is “in its final moments,” rhetoric that progressive sectors describe as bellicose and lacking in empathy.

In response to this triumphalism from the US right, publications such as The Nation magazine and the North American Congress on Latin America (NACLA) published essays and reports this Thursday that dismantle the official narrative surrounding the so-called Cuban crisis of 2026.

Both outlets argue that the tightening of the economic embargo, including the cessation of operations of remittance platforms, and the suffocating financial blockade, function as a form of collective violence and humanitarian punishment that directly affects the civilian population, not the government.

Furthermore, they subject to rigorous analysis the recent reforms announced by President Miguel Diaz-Canel, specifically the opening of the hotel sector to private management, and distance themselves “from the simplistic interpretations that see this as a surrender to Washington.”

These openings will primarily benefit foreign capital and elites connected to the international market, while the Cuban working class continues to suffer the hardships of scarcity and inflation unleashed by unilateral coercive measures, warn reports in these publications.

For its part, Jacobin, another progressive publication, demands the immediate end to the Treasury Department’s sanctions and expresses solidarity with the demands of Cuban civil society, reaffirming the growing unease generated in intellectual circles regarding this policy of the United States government.
