“Our country’s position on the colonial question of Puerto Rico is historic and unwavering,” affirmed Cuban Ambassador to the UN, Ernesto Soberon.
The UN Decolonization Committee is scheduled to address Puerto Rico’s right to self-determination and independence at its headquarters in New York, where delegates from Puerto Rican groups are already present.
The Cuban diplomat reiterated to the newspaper Cuba’s firm solidarity with the people of Puerto Rico, with whom we share long-standing historical and cultural ties and a history of struggles against colonial domination.
Cuba will present a resolution to the UN Special Committee on Decolonization that “reaffirms the inalienable right of the people of Puerto Rico to self-determination and independence, in accordance with General Assembly resolution 1514 (XV),” according to Jose A. Delgado, correspondent for El Nuevo Día in Washington, D.C.
Soberon emphasized “the urgent need for the United States to create the necessary conditions for the full implementation of the aforementioned resolution, as well as the other resolutions and decisions of the Special Committee relating to Puerto Rico.”
If the resolution, which urges the UN General Assembly to reopen the Puerto Rican colonial case, is approved, it would be the 44th time the Special Committee on Decolonization has recognized Puerto Rico’s right to self-determination and independence.
