“The passing of Commander of the Revolution, Ramiro Valdes Menendez, is deeply painful, like the loss of a father. That is how I always loved and respected him.
That is how I will remember his support and advice, his discreet collaboration, and his exemplary dedication to the service of the Homeland,” the president wrote on the social network X.
Diaz-Canel emphasized that every act of the Commander’s life was marked by his complete fidelity to the leadership of Fidel and Raul Castro, to his comrades in arms, and to the Moncada Program, “whose just essence he defended, from the assault on the dictatorship’s fortress in 1953 until the last breath of his exemplary life this Father’s Day.”
“Until victory, always, Commander!” the Cuban president concluded. Ramiro Valdes was a prominent figure in the history of Cuba.
Linked to revolutionary activities from a very young age, he participated in decisive events of the insurrectionary struggle led by the historical leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro.
He participated in the attack on the Moncada Barracks in 1953 and the Granma yacht expedition in 1956. He also attained the rank of Commander in the Rebel Army in the Sierra Maestra mountains.
After the triumph of January 1, 1959, he assumed high-level military, political, and governmental responsibilities of huge importance to the country.
