The term Nikkei identifies Japanese migrants and their descendants. On the Caribbean island, the census completed in February 2025 confirmed the presence of 991 Nikkei distributed across 15 provinces.
The event was attended by Japanese Ambassador, Nakamura Kazuhito; the representative of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in Cuba, Ashida Tatsuya; and the president and vice president of the Nikkei Association’s Steering Committee, Francisca Arakawa and Ivis Imamura, along with members of the diplomatic corps and the community.
Ambassador Nakamura described the date as “a very special occasion, an opportunity to reflect on the values and legacy of the Nikkei people, who throughout the generations have contributed to their country without forgetting their roots.”
He also emphasized that it is not only about preserving the past, but about building a future where the community serves as a bridge to strengthen relations between Cuba and Japan.
