China introduces law to boost ethnic unity and progress

Beijing, Jun 24 (Prensa Latina) China introduced the Law on boosting Ethnic Unity and Progress, considered a fundamental norm for managing ethnic affairs and minority-related work.

Chen Ruifeng, director of the National Ethnic Affairs Commission, stated that ethnic unity is the lifeline of national work on ethnicities.

The official noted that the law implements the provisions, principles, and spirit of the Constitution, and establishes a legal basis for consolidating the Chinese nation’s sense of community and promoting community building. Chen pointed out that the legislation incorporates the experiences gained since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China in boosting the construction of the Chinese nation’s community and advancing ethnic unity.

He emphasized that the law shows the Party and State’s political orientations on ethnic work, while also establishing tasks and directions for strengthening unity among different groups.

Chen pointed out that the legislation aims at protecting the fundamental and general interests of the Chinese nation by promoting ethnic relations based on unity and common development.

The director of the National Ethnic Affairs Commission explained that the law defines the rights, obligations, and responsibilities of citizens, state agencies, social organizations, enterprises, public institutions, religious groups, and other actors involved in ethnic affairs.

Chen emphasized that this is the only law promulgated since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China that includes a separate preamble, an element that shows its guiding and fundamental nature within the legal framework.
