Cuban university showcases AI potential in the Dominican Republic

Camaguey, Cuba, Jun 25 (Prensa Latina) The University of Camaguey presented the results of over two decades of work on the development and application of artificial intelligence in education during a visit to the Dominican Republic.

A keynote lecture delivered by the institution’s rector, PhD. Julio Madera Quintana, highlighted various achievements in this field and their impact on academic cooperation between the two Caribbean nations.

The presentation, titled “Artificial Intelligence in Education: From Promise to Practice,” took place at the Salome Urena Higher Institute for Teacher’s Training (Urania Montas Campus) in the city of San Juan, attended by students and faculty from the institution.

According to the Cuban institution’s official website, Madera Quintana discussed key international trends regarding the use of artificial intelligence in teaching and learning processes, citing statistics from UNESCO and other specialized agencies.

The data revealed that 86 percent of university students currently use artificial intelligence tools in their studies, while 47 percent fail to adequately assess the limitations and risks associated with these technologies—a situation that poses a challenge for contemporary education systems.

As part of the lecture, the University of Camagüey shared experiences gained from its scientific research, including an expert system for Linear Algebra tutoring, a predictive model for the early detection of student dropout, and blended learning platforms featuring intelligent student-tracking mechanisms.

These results reinforce a research track record that positions the institution as a leading national authority in the field and enabled it to join the Artificial Intelligence Consortium of Cuba—established in 2025—as a founding university.
