“We convey our deepest condolences for the tragic consequences of the devastating earthquake that occurred in northwestern Venezuela,” the telegram published this Thursday on the Kremlin’s official website reads.
Putin asked that his words of sincere sympathy be conveyed to the families and loved ones of the victims and wished a speedy recovery to all those affected by the natural disaster.
Meanwhile, Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that Russia will consider any requests for assistance from Venezuela following the earthquakes.
“If there are requests from our Venezuelan friends, of course they will be examined operationally,” Peskov stated this Thursday in his usual press briefing.
Two earthquakes of magnitude 7.2 and 7.5, respectively, struck Caracas and several other regions of Venezuela around 6:00 p.m. (Caracas time) on Wednesday, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
This double earthquake was the strongest since the so-called San Narciso earthquake, which shook central Venezuela on October 29, 1900.
Rodriguez confirmed early Thursday that the natural disaster caused at least 32 deaths and more than 700 injuries, not including the victims in La Guaira state, the hardest hit, with dozens of collapsed buildings.
