ILO Director welcomes worker participation in decision-making in Cuba

Havana, Jun 27 (Prensa Latina) – International Labour Organization (ILO) Director-General Gilbert Houngbo welcomed the participation of workers in the country's decision-making, according to a message addressed to the 22nd Congress of the Workers' Central Union of Cuba (CTC).

Houngbo stated that, in times of constraints and under current circumstances, the commitment, resilience, and creativity of the Cuban people have become more important than ever.

He also expressed appreciation for the opportunity provided by the congress to review the results of the extensive consultations regarding the draft Labor Code—a process in which more than two million workers across the Caribbean nation participated.

This broad participation reflects the importance of listening to the voices of workers; in this regard, he highlighted that they are essential to driving effective and inclusive policies.

The video message highlighted efforts in Cuba to strengthen productive sectors—including food production and the energy transition—which are fundamental to creating opportunities, supporting enterprises, and improving living standards.

Furthermore, he noted the importance of addressing wages, work organization, and transparency regarding the fair distribution of benefits generated by economic activity.

Finally, ILO Director-General Gilbert Houngbo wished for a highly successful congress and productive debates that contribute to the well-being of Cuban workers and to a prosperous, sustainable future for Cuba.
