In a message posted on the social media platform X, Rezaei stated that Washington had breached Articles 1 and 5 of the agreement by backing its “proxy forces” in the region and escalating tensions in the Strait of Hormuz.
The Iranian official emphasized that Tehran would respond “swiftly and forcefully” to any violation of the memorandum’s clauses.
His remarks come amidst rising tensions following an announcement by Iranian state television regarding an alleged “hostile attack” on the pier at the port of Sirik, in the country’s south.
Subsequently, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed to have carried out actions against U.S. targets in the region in retaliation for those events, while U.S. Central Command reported airstrikes against Iran in response to an earlier incident involving a merchant vessel in the Strait of Hormuz.
On June 18, Washington and Tehran signed a memorandum of understanding providing for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz to commercial maritime traffic, in an effort to stabilize a key route for global energy trade.
