Cuba’s CIGB celebrates 40 years

Havana, Jul 1 (Prensa Latina) Havana-based Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (CIGB) is celebrating its 40th anniversary, having earned well-deserved international recognition for the development of several drugs and vaccines with proven effectiveness for human and animal health.

Its prestige is included in the annals of modern biotechnology, that is to say, using genetic engineering and recombinant DNA techniques to obtain medicines, vaccines, and diagnostic tests.

Founded on July 1, by Fidel Castro, the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, the CIGB has made its mark on the scientific history of this nation and the world for developing several drugs and vaccines, including two of the island’s five Covid-19 vaccine candidates: Mambisa (CIGB-669) and Abdala (CIGB-66).

The CIGB also works on other subjects and technological platforms, including recombinant proteins, chemical synthesis, and synthetic peptides.

The center continues its research on diverse protein imprinting hosts, such as yeast, mammalian cells, and bacteria.

The CIGB was recognized in 2021 as a High-Tech enterprise in Cuba and a National Vanguard.
