At a press conference, Uruguay’s ambassador to Cuba, Juan Canessa, explained that these are films “from the South,” created and distributed to reflect the realities and challenges faced in the region.
Discussing the story told in *Becho*, he highlighted that it takes place during the 1924 Paris Olympics and serves as a tribute to the creator of “La Cumparsita”—a piece that originated as the anthem for a student federation.
Audiences will also be able to enjoy the film *El bano del papa* (2007), based on Pope John Paul II’s visit to Melo, an impoverished border town in Uruguay where the Pontiff began his 1988 tour of Latin America.
With over ten international awards to its credit, the film was presented at the 60th Cannes Film Festival (2007) in the *Un Certain Regard* section. It also won the Best Screenplay Award at the 33rd Ibero-American Film Festival of Huelva (Spain) and the Gold Award at Uruguay’s Iris Awards (2008).
Additionally, it received the Glauber Rocha Award—presented by the Latin American news agency Prensa Latina—at the 29th International Festival of New Latin American Cinema in Havana.
Rounding out the selection are *Viaje hacia el mar* (2003), the story of six people who have never seen the ocean and decide to discover it, and *Nina y Enma* (2023), inspired by two young friends embarking on their first summer vacation alone.
