Ebrard to provide details on USMCA meeting

Mexico City, Jul 2 (Prensa Latina) Mexican Economy Secretary Marcelo Ebrard will provide details on a meeting with representatives from Canada and the US, the latter of which refused to extend the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) for 16 years.

“I will see you tomorrow at the morning press briefing, because the president (Claudia Sheinbaum) asked me to be there to give you more detailed information,” Ebrard announced in a video shared on social media to discuss the results of the virtual meeting.

The economy secretary mentioned the two possibilities surrounding the meeting, which marked the formal start of the review of the USMCA, which is to extend the pact for 16 years if the three parties agree, or maintain the treaty’s validity until 2036.

Both Mexico and Canada expressed their support for the first option.

The diplomat stated, “The United States is not in a position to extend it for 16 years; therefore, we will proceed with the annual review for the next 10 years, which is the agreed-upon term of the treaty.”

After he met with Canadian Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc and US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, Ebrard mentioned that during that decade, “if they reach an agreement, which is the plan,” the three members could extend the term to 16 years.
