Spain: Gijon hosts three-day solidarity event with Cuba

Gijon, Spain, Jul 4 (Prensa Latina) Gijon is hosting a three-day solidarity event with Cuba, featuring the 18th National Gathering, which highlights the historical, cultural, and human ties between Asturias and the island.

In the event, attended by over 200 participants, the new “Alicia Alonso Gardens” public space was inaugurated; it is dedicated to one of the most globally renowned figures in Cuban culture and world ballet.

Ingrid Izquierdo, Consul General for Asturias, Galicia, and Cantabria, thanked Gijon City Council and the Lazaro Cardenas Association for spearheading an initiative that, she stated, leaves “a lasting legacy for the shared memory” of both peoples.

The Cuban diplomat also noted that Gijon and Havana have maintained a sister-city relationship since 1994, founded on mutual respect, cooperation, and deep historical, cultural, and human bonds.

Cubainformacion noted that Gijon gathering is taking place at a particularly difficult time for Cuba, and the tribute to one of its great global icons also serves as a gesture of friendship toward its people.

Condemning Washington’s economic, commercial, and financial blockade, fighting against disinformation campaigns, and promoting cooperation projects will be three key focuses of the gathering.

The National Movement of Solidarity with Cuba (MESC) and the Lazaro Cardenas Association—the event’s organizers—highlighted that the gathering is taking place during a particularly symbolic year, marking the centenary of the birth of the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro.
