In a statement delivered by Singapore on behalf of the regional bloc’s member states, ASEAN reaffirmed its support for the resolution titled “Necessity of ending the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States of America against the Republic of Cuba.”

The group noted that its position reflects a commitment to the principles enshrined in the UN Charter, including the sovereign equality of states, non-interference in internal affairs, and the peaceful settlement of disputes.

ASEAN also expressed concern regarding the impact of sanctions on the Cuban population, noting that they affect access to food, medicines, and other essential supplies.

The regional bloc further warned that restrictions on fuel exports to Cuba have exacerbated the energy crisis and limited the country’s ability to respond effectively to natural disasters linked to climate change.

In this context, ASEAN advocated for dialogue based on mutual respect as the means to resolve differences between states and urged Washington and Havana to maintain constructive contact.

The organization also urged the United States to end the economic, commercial, and financial blockade and to remove Cuba from the list of state sponsors of terrorism, while expressing its readiness to continue addressing the issue in future UN General Assembly sessions. jdt/ga/ybv
