“Cuba and South Sudan are united by historical and fraternal bonds of friendship, solidarity and cooperation,” the Foreign Ministry expressed in social network X.
South Sudan formalized its independence on July 9 ,2011 after a referendum on self-determination.
The referendum was called by the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) between the Government of Sudan and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM), which ended more than 20 years of war.
The Sudanese authorities were responsible for the referendum process. Under the leadership of the Secretary-General, the United Nations provided technical and logistical assistance to the CPA parties in preparing for the referendum through support from their peacekeeping missions, which were intended to ensure impartiality. the independence and effectiveness of the process.
