Gaza reports sharp rise in pox cases

Cairo, Jul 8 (Prensa Latina) — Cases of pox are showing a marked increase in the Gaza Strip.

According to reports, the situation is being exacerbated by the precarious living conditions of hundreds of thousands of displaced people in tent camps established after their homes were destroyed by indiscriminate Israeli military bombardment.

This warning appears in the latest Humanitarian Situation Report issued by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) and is based on information from sources on the ground.

The crisis is compounded by the systematic destruction of hospitals and medical clinics in the Palestinian coastal enclave by Tel Aviv’s armed forces, which occupy 60 percent of the Strip.

In the last two weeks alone, 9,300 cases were detected—half of them in the Khan Yunis refugee camp—according to the source.

It adds that “this surge is driven by deteriorating environmental conditions, overcrowding, and gaps in hygiene and sanitation, all complicated by high summer temperatures.”

Compounding this dire situation is a proliferation of rodents and other pests in 83 percent of the displacement camps, according to findings from the research conducted for the OCHA report.
