The Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement welcoming Washington’s announcement, following talks in Ankara on Wednesday between Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa and his US counterpart, Donald Trump.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted that Syria welcomes the initiation of procedures to repeal the law designating it as a sponsor state of terrorism, as well as the notification sent by the US president to Congress about his intention to take this step.
According to the ministry, the measure represents a major step forward in the course of US-Syrian relations, based on dialogue, mutual respect and shared interests.
The portfolio asserted that removal of this designation, together with the lifting of sanctions, will help to improve economic recovery opportunities, create the necessary environment for reconstruction and foster trade and investment.
He added that these steps will serve the interests of the Syrian people and support security and stability in the region.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced on Wednesday that Trump has formally notified the Congress of his administration’s intention to revoke Syria’s designation as a sponsor state of terrorism.
