The Cuban rescue brigade has shown professionalism and humanism in the areas hit by the earthquakes in Venezuela; the country’s government awarded them the “Heroes and Heroines of Venezuela” medal in recognition of their dedication and bravery, Morales wrote on the social network X.
The senior Cuban official added that these young faces show the spirit of solidarity inherent in Cuban cooperation, which is always present wherever it is needed.
“A well-deserved tribute to their sacrifice and love for their fellow human beings,” he stated.
Members of the Cuban brigade—comprising 37 rescue workers and three dogs—who supported search and rescue efforts following the intense earthquakes in the South American nation, received the “Heroes of Venezuela” decoration. Alongside representatives from six other countries—Costa Rica, Panama, El Salvador, Mexico, Turkiye, and Vietnam—Acting President Delcy Rodriguez presented the medal to Lieutenant Colonel Ruben Pupo, the mission chief, who accepted it on behalf of his fellow citizens.
The distinction was also presented by the leader to Choco, Evan, and Tito—the three search-and-rescue dogs that accompanied the Cuban specialists, who had arrived in Venezuela in two groups in response to the call from the Bolivarian government.
Additionally, the acting head of state presented a letter of appreciation to Jorge Mayo, Havana’s ambassador in Caracas, addressed to Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel and his government, acknowledging their contribution of solidarity and humanitarian aid in the wake of what is considered the “greatest natural disaster” in Venezuela’s history. jdt/rc/ybv
