Chilean Network member welcomes debate on US blockade

Santiago, Chile, Jul 10 (Prensa Latina) Agueda Saez, of the Chilean Network of Journalists and Communicators Friends of Cuba, welcomed the vote at the United Nations in which 136 countries supported the need to put an end the US blockade against the Caribbean nation.

In statements to Prensa Latina, Saez deemed it important the content of the speeches at the General Assembly and stated that the economic, commercial, financial, and energy siege is a repressive policy incompatible with international law.

She said several speakers also noted that this unilateral policy aims at a collective and massive punishment against the Cuban people.

The journalist assessed that, despite pressure from Secretary of State Marco Rubio, 136 countries voted in favor of debating the issue, compared to only eight against, including the United States itself.

She warned that what Marco Rubio did seems abominable to me; he tried to dictate to countries what they should do and say.

The US government previously tried to prevent the World Food Program (WFP) from implementing its assistance plan for the Caribbean nation.

Saez deemed it regrettable that the current Chilean government abstained from the vote on the issue of the US blockade.
