Held in the homonimous city since 1991, the Garanhuns festival draws thousands of visitors each year with a lineup featuring concerts, theater, dance, circus arts, literature, visual arts, cinema, and gastronomy, alongside expressions of Brazilian folk culture.
The opening of the event—considered the largest of its kind in northeastern Brazil—will take place at Mestre Dominguinhos Square, featuring performances by Ciel Rodrigues, Raphaela Santos, Zezo, and Sheldon.
Friday’s program will highlight female voices in Brazilian music, with performances by Flay, Joyce Alane, Adriana Calcanhotto, Alcione, and Paula Fernandes; the weekend lineup includes Anavitória, Jota Quest, Luísa Sonza, Alexandre Pires, and Thiaguinho, among other artists.
Activities will take place across 20 venues throughout the city, including visual arts and photography exhibitions, audiovisual showcases, theater productions, dance and circus performances, art workshops, literary events, and regional culinary gatherings.
Folk culture will play a prominent role, featuring performances by traditional groups and folklore parades that will make their way through the streets of Garanhuns during the second half of the festival.
This year, the event gained further recognition after being officially declared an expression of national culture through a law signed by President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and published in the Official Gazette of the Union in April. jdt/mem/mar
