Colombia: UN to report on Peace Agreement progress

Bogota, Jul 14 (Prensa Latina) The progress of implementing the 2016 Peace Agreement will be released just a few hours after President-elect Abelardo De la Espriella announced the dismantling of structures associated with the pact's implementation.

The United Nations Verification Mission in this nation will release its quarterly report, covering the period from March 27 to June 26, which it periodically presents to the Security Council on the progress and challenges of the Agreement signed between the Government and the former Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia-People’s Army (FARC-EP).

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres highlighted in the last analysis, presented in April, the Colombian State’s commitment “to maintain and promote” the objectives of the pact.

In addition to highlighting the historic impact of the Agreement for “expanding the country’s democratic space,” Guterres highlighted that “it is a comprehensive roadmap for addressing the structural causes of the conflict.”

The UN chief also noted how, almost ten years after the laying down of weapons, more than 11,000 former combatants remain active in the Comprehensive Reintegration Program, despite the complex security environment.

On this point, Guterres urged the Government to maintain a strong focus on implementing comprehensive policies that guarantee former guerrillas access to land, housing, public services, and economic opportunities.
