On his X (formerly Twitter) account, Rodriguez warned that this gathering will attempt to substantiate the existence of alleged dangers posed by progressive forces, leftist organizations, social movements, and anyone fighting against the oppression, exploitation, racism, war, interventionism, and imperialist brutality unleashed by the current US administration. He further warned that this action is a new attempt to restore intimidation tactics and legitimize policies like the infamous Operation Condor, which was based on similar pretexts.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has summoned foreign ministers from more than 60 countries to a meeting in Washington to address the alleged “resurgence of far-left transnational terrorism.”
The initiative has sparked concern both within and outside the United States, amid fears of the political manipulation of national security mechanisms and the use of the concept of terrorism as a political tool to justify extreme surveillance measures against individuals and sovereign nations.
The term “McCarthyism” derives its name from Republican Senator Joseph McCarthy (1947–1957), who, during his ten years in the Senate, stoked fear of “Reds,” promoted anti-communist harassment, and spearheaded investigations into individuals within the federal government.
McCarthy and his associates—primarily between 1950 and 1956—persecuted those labeled as Soviet agents or communist sympathizers who had allegedly infiltrated the civil service, the media, or the military.
Likewise, the crimes committed during the implementation of Operation Condor—a mechanism established by various South American military dictatorships to persecute, torture, and eliminate progressive activists—remain an open wound on the continent.
Several social organizations have warned that a new phase of persecution against groups and individuals based on their political and social views may be emerging in the United States—similar to what occurred during the Cold War (1947–1991).
