Iran demands recognizing legal framework to reopen Strait of Hormuz

Tehran, Jul 16 (Prensa Latina) The Strait of Hormuz will remain closed unless the United States recognizes the legal framework established by Iran to regulate this strategic waterway, Iranian military spokesman Mohammad Akramini stated.

Citing the official agency IRNA, Akramini asserted that control over the strait has become a “national imperative” and emphasized that the Armed Forces will continue to defend the rights of the Iranian people.

In April 2026, the Iranian Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission approved a bill titled “Law on Establishing Iranian Sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz” and referred it to the legislature for debate.

Washington, other Western nations, and international bodies rejected these measures, arguing that they violate the principle of freedom of navigation in international straits.

Akramini maintained that the United States sought to control this strategic route through attacks on Iranian bases located along the country’s southern coast.

However, he asserted that Iran can control the strait from any point within its territory and that this capability is not limited to the coastlines or islands.

US Central Command reported that its forces had attacked coastal defense positions and cruise missile sites on the Iranian island of Greater Tunb.

In recent days, Tehran has responded with attacks on facilities it identifies as US military positions in several Arab countries, including Kuwait, Bahrain, and Jordan.
