In an official statement, the Nicaraguan Ministry of Foreign Affairs asserted that the decision was a response to what it described as offensive remarks made by the head of Italian diplomacy against the people and government of Nicaragua.
“With European arrogance, and in violation of all norms of respect governing relations between peoples and governments, he has insulted the people and government of Nicaragua,” the text noted.
The Foreign Ministry added that, as a “forceful expression of sovereignty and national dignity,” it had informed Italian authorities of the decision to break off all diplomatic relations with that country.
The statement recalled that Nicaragua had maintained ties of mutual respect and understanding with previous Italian authorities for years, noting that there had been relations based on cooperation and dialogue regarding various international events.
It also expressed regret that the current situation contrasts with the historic relationship between the two nations and voiced hope that conditions of mutual respect could be restored in the future.
“We hope for the arrival of those better days that humanity so greatly needs and demands,” the Nicaraguan government stated.
Nicaragua announced that it would initiate the necessary procedures to implement the sovereign decision to end diplomatic relations with Italy.
