Brazil steps up fight against fuel sector crimes

Brasilia, Jul 17 (Prensa Latina) The Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro will launch a coordinated effort to strengthen the fight against crimes linked to the fuel sector, which is considered a strategic area of the regional economy.

The decision was reached in a meeting attended by the state’s Public Prosecutor Antonio Jose Campos Moreira, State Secretary of Finance Guilherme Merces, and State Attorney General Bruno Dubeux, among other officials.

Agencia Brasil reported that the meeting aimed to define strategic actions to strengthen cooperation among institutions responsible for oversight, control, and criminal prosecution, with the goal of increasing the capacity to confront criminal networks operating in that market.

According to Campos Moreira, the fight against criminal organizations requires integrated action among various public agencies, as institutional coordination allows for more effective identification of illicit practices, holding perpetrators accountable, and protecting the economic order.

During the meeting, it was also agreed to intensify operational integration among the technical teams of the participating institutions and to reactivate the activities of the Inter-institutional Committee for Asset Recovery—a permanent cooperation mechanism designed to carry out joint intelligence, investigation, and asset recovery operations regarding goods obtained through illegal activities.

For his part, Merces stated that the initiative would refine joint action mechanisms across various work fronts, particularly against business structures used to commit fraud in different markets, with special attention paid to the fuel sector. The meeting was organized by the Ministry of Justice and Public Security at the headquarters of the National Anti-Counterfeiting Office in Rio de Janeiro.

According to officials, strengthening inter-institutional cooperation will help increase the effectiveness of investigations and reduce the impact of criminal organizations on a key economic activity.
