Lessons on Asian resistance against the US highlighted in Sri Lanka

Colombo, Jul 17 (Prensa Latina) Iran shattered the myth of US invincibility, reaffirmed Setareh Sadeqi Mohammadi of the University of Tehran during the "Hands Off Asia" conference currently underway in the city.

During a panel on anti-imperialist resistance by the region’s peoples and governments, the Iranian researcher stated that her country succeeded in exercising a form of “spatial veto” in the Strait of Hormuz, ensuring that US bases in the region ceased to be safe havens for those hosting them, *Breakthrough News* reported.

Meanwhile, Keiko Yonaha, representing the “No More Battle of Okinawa” collective, outlined the long history of the Japanese prefecture’s struggle against Washington’s bases and the dangers posed by threats of war surrounding Taiwan.

Yonaha warned that the country could be dragged into war if the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) government remains in power, adding that Tokyo must fight for the right to self-determination, self-governance, and national dignity.

Filipino activist Corazon Valdez Fabros—of the International Peace Bureau and the STOP the War coalition—analyzed how her country is being transformed into a logistics and base hub for US-led war planning in the Asia-Pacific region, where military spending and dual-use infrastructure are displacing social needs.

The activist cited crucial examples such as the Luzon Economic Corridor, which has clear dual-use potential, and the “Pax Silica” initiative, which is explicitly presented as a measure to counter China.

For her part, Meei Shia Chen of Taiwan’s Diaoyutai Education Association addressed the political, military, and ideological reach of the United States over her country, as well as the resistance mounted by a small but committed group of activists.

She also recounted the history of her organization’s resistance, which fights against the attempted transfer of the Diaoyutai Islands from the United States to Japan and against the harassment of fishermen in the area.
