EU could lower carbon tariffs in response to industry demands

Brussels, Jul 17 (Prensa Latina) The European Commission (EC) softened its requirements regarding carbon emissions tariffs, a cornerstone of the bloc's environmental policy, in response to demands from businesses.

Brussels proposed concessions that the 27 EU member States and their parliamentarians will have to review in a negotiation that could take months, given the pressure from the German chemical industry, Central European countries, and Italy.

The negotiation includes allowing European industry to emit CO2 for longer than currently planned (until 2038 instead of 2034) and at a lower cost, on the condition that companies agree to cease emitting this greenhouse gas in the future.

Similarly, companies would be authorized, starting in 2036, to acquire international carbon credits by financing decarbonization projects in countries outside the region, which would be taken into account when analyzing the reduction of emissions.
