Mazu, Chinese AI weather-alert model, expands to more countries

Beijing, Jul 18 (Prensa Latina) China announced the expansion of the Mazu intelligent weather-alert system—an AI-driven platform hailed as one of the country's key initiatives—to 30 countries.

President Xi Jinping announced the move during the opening of the 2026 World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) and the High-Level Meeting on Global AI Governance, both of which are running through July 20 in Shanghai.

Xi noted that the program would help protect lives and property by strengthening early-warning capabilities against extreme weather events.

Hours later, UN Secretary-General António Guterres stated at a specialized WAIC forum that Mazu advances the UN-promoted “Early Warnings for All” initiative.

Guterres highlighted China’s contribution to improving early-warning capabilities in dozens of countries through platforms, satellites, and AI models, as well as its support for developing nations in acquiring the tools to issue their own alerts.

The Secretary-General emphasized that this model of cooperation—based on technology transfer, joint research, and local capacity building—addresses the current needs of the international community.
