Brazil’s PDT officially backs Lula’s re-election bid

Brasilia, Jul 21 (Prensa Latina) Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva now has the backing of the Democratic Labor Party (PDT), after the organization officially endorsed the president's candidacy for the general elections.

The decision was taken during the party’s convention, attended by Lula and the national president of the Workers’ Party (PT), Edinho Silva.

In the gathering, Senator Weverton Rocha—deputy government leader in the Senate and a member of the PDT’s national leadership—stated that the support for Lula stems from a political and strategic decision, without implying the abandonment of the party’s own initiatives.

Rocha also noted that his party’s parliamentary caucus has supported the government since the presidential transition period and maintained that the party has backed the Executive branch’s key initiatives in the National Congress.

For his part, Silva stated that democracies face growing challenges because broad sectors of the population do not perceive concrete improvements in their living conditions following electoral processes.

The PT leader also warned of the rise of the far-right and fascist-like movements in various countries, noting that the upcoming October elections would be significant not only for Brazil but also for Latin America.

“Given that President Lula is currently the most important leader in the democratic world, we know that his victory will also signal to the world that it is indeed possible to defeat fascism and the far-right,” Silva stated, according to comments reported by the G1 news portal.
