The decision was made in Brasilia during the organization’s convention, to which Lula and Edinho Silva, national president of the Workers’ Party (PT), participated.
The PDT, with this announcement, became the first political organization to endorse the president’s reelection bid formally at the start of the party convention period, running from July 20 to August 5.
During the meeting, Senator Weverton Rocha, deputy chief of the Government in the Senate and a member of the national leadership at the PDT, affirmed that Lula’s support responds to a political and strategic decision, without implying any abandonment of the party’s projects.
The Brasil 247 portal noted that other organizations within the allied base, including the Brazilian Socialist Party (PSB) and the PSOL-Rede Federation, are also expected to formalize their support for Lula’s candidacy in the coming days.
The PT will hold its national convention on August 2 to formalize the current president’s nomination for reelection.
