Agritourism at a Cuban sugar mill

Havana, Jul 22 (Prensa Latina) Agritourism is a top preference among travelers visiting Cuba, with the "Patria" sugar mill in the island's central region serving as a prime example.

Despite the economic challenges facing the country, many vacationers seeking knowledge and a more intimate experience are embracing this opportunity.

Agritourism is linked to local production, culture, and traditions; in Cuba, it is exemplified by industrial sites that once played a leading role in sugar production, such as the Patria mill.

The aforementioned mill—now converted into a museum—offers a great example of this. Its indoor and outdoor galleries showcase the rich history of the country’s sugar industry.

Guides not only share key information with visitors but also accompany a group of actors who reenact scenes from the past, including the era of slavery. Vintage industrial machinery and a collection of historic locomotives further enhance the exhibition.

At the end of the tour, visitors take a ride on a vintage train through the sugar-growing landscape to a farm, where they enjoy lunch and experience rural life, cuisine, and traditions firsthand.

The Patria mill, located three kilometers from Moron, in the central Cuban province of Ciego de Avila, operated from 1914 to 2000.
