An official statement from the Presidential Secretariat of Social Communication, shared by President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on his X profile this morning, described July 15, 2026, as “a regrettable framework” in the history of relations between the two countries.
The statement noted that the Brazilian Government condemns the decision announced by the US Government regarding the imposition of 25 percent tariffs on Brazilian products, based on Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974.
The Planalto Palace stated that there is no justification for the adoption of unilateral measures against the country, given that, according to statistics from the US government itself, the United States has accumulated a trade surplus of 424.5 billion dollars, in goods and services with Brazil, during the last 15 years.
The Brazilian Government explained that during the last year, it has been actively engaging with the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) to seek the closure of investigations based on Section 301 and presented evidence to refute accusations of alleged unfair trade practices.
