Cuba to sing to Mexico in another act of solidarity between peoples

Havana, Jul 22 (Prensa Latina) The bond of brotherhood between Cuba and Mexico stands out as an act of love toward a country that appreciates every gesture of solidarity; culture plays an essential role in this through the hosting of a music contest.

In honor of the “Grito de Independencia” (Cry of Independence) in Mexico—to be commemorated in September—the contest “Serenata a Mexico” (Serenade to Mexico) seeks to convey a powerful message to the world: Cuba is not alone, and the right to self-determination is shared by both peoples.

This was the view expressed by Mexican Ambassador Miguel Díaz Reynoso during a press conference at the diplomatic mission in Havana, where he provided details about the celebration.

Paying tribute to the artistic legacy, vocal talent, stage presence, and deep roots of Mexican music on the island, the event invites amateurs, singers, and admirers of the art form to participate in two categories: performing the songs of Mexican singer-songwriter Juan Gabriel and performing Mexican *ranchera* music.

The initiative—which aims to hold future editions—seeks to showcase the voices singing to Mexico and to recognize those who have preserved this music in Cuba, noted Eleonora Isunza, the embassy’s cultural attaché, during the gathering.

While some might question holding the contest amidst the “new reality,” “we believe it is necessary to maintain cultural life within communities and institutions,” stated Fernando Rojas, advisor to Cuba’s Minister of Culture, while expressing gratitude for the collaborative effort toward a worthy cause.

“If there is anyone who can say that Cuba is not alone, it is Mexico, and we are deeply grateful for that,” he emphasized. The “Serenata a Mexico” contest is about precisely that—art and love, overcoming challenges, and prevailing over the current times—“because simply raising one’s hand to condemn the blockade is not enough: we must turn votes into action and take the next step,” the Mexican diplomat asserted.
