In a statement titled “Brotherhood Amidst Many Trials,” Nicaragua’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, upon admitting receipt of the Panamanian missive, noted that the note does not show the values of non-interference and non-intervention that—it asserted—have characterized the historic ties of unity among the peoples of “Our America” and the Caribbean. “The sovereignty of our people is not up for debate; it is defended using the arguments inherent to our constitutional and legal framework,” the Nicaraguan Foreign Ministry emphasized.
The document highlighted the historic bonds between the two peoples and affirmed that Nicaragua and Panama will continue to be “brothers in the honor and glory” of having fought against various forms of imperialism, interventionism, and foreign occupation.
Furthermore, the Sandinista government recalled the figure of Panamanian General Omar Torrijos and invoked one of his famous quotes: “Respect for the rights of peoples is peace.”
“To the brother Government of the Republic of Panama, and to its people—whom we have stood by at all times, whether difficult, turbulent, or victorious,” Managua stated, reiterating its commitment to defending national sovereignty and the principles of non-intervention in the internal affairs of states.
