Chile: Bachelet calls for defending, preserving, and reforming UN

Santiago, Chile, Jul 24 (Prensa Latina) The key task for the next UN secretary-general will be to defend, preserve, and improve the multilateral organization, even through ongoing reforms, affirmed former Chilean President Michelle Bachelet, who is currently one of the candidates for the position.

Bachelet participated in a debate with the other five candidates vying to succeed Antonio Guterres as UN chief on January 1, 2027.

She warned, “We live in times of armed conflict at a historic level, where civilians are being killed or injured in tragic numbers, inequalities are increasing, the climate crisis is becoming ever more urgent, and human rights are being ignored.”

The former Chilean president noted that the world is nowadays facing global challenges, and therefore, no one can solve them alone.

Bachelet, who served as the President of Chile for two terms (2006-2010 and 2014-2018), stated that there will be no peace in the world without development and respect for human rights.

The six candidates for secretary-general of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) faced off in a televised debate this Thursday.
