In a message shared on social media, Becerra—who also chairs the Friendship and Solidarity Group between the Colombian Congress and Cuba’s National Assembly of People’s Power (the country’s unicameral parliament)—underscored the importance of preserving the ideas of the leader of the Cuban Revolution.
In his view, this matter is vital given the current times, “when the far-right project threatens the very existence of humanity—just as Commander Fidel Castro warned regarding the climate crisis—and threatens freedoms and democracy, which could be eliminated under an authoritarian, neo-fascist outlook.”
He further noted that the opportunity to delve into Castro’s thought “leads us to highlight, above all, the ideas of independence, sovereignty, and the identity of ‘Our America,’ as taught to us by Cuba’s Apostle, the great poet José Martí.” Becerra asserted that Fidel Castro’s ideas remain fully relevant to the struggles and battles of “our people—the people of Latin America and the Caribbean.”
He affirmed that “from Colombia, we will persist in the struggle to definitively overcome violence, to defend national sovereignty against imperialist wars worldwide, to foster the integration of ‘Our America,’ and to advance a dignified societal project for our homeland.”
The legislator also sent greetings regarding the upcoming parliamentary gathering in Cuba, part of the First International Colloquoy “Fidel: Legacy and Future,” scheduled for August 10–13, 2026, at Havana Convention Center.
“A sincere embrace from the Historic Pact, from the Colombian Congress’s friendship group with the National Assembly of People’s Power and the people of Cuba—who today continue to set an example of resistance and steadfast commitment to the independence and sovereignty of our America,” he stated in his message.
