“The Cuban people have the right to live in peace and with respect for their dignity,” states the solidarity resolution, presented by councilors Concetta Cuparo and Nunzio Funaro, of the Le Lampare civic movement, one of the leading political forces in this town in the province of Cosenza, in southern Calabria.
The text, published on the La Nuova Calabria online newspaper, rejects the recent abstention of the Italian government in the July 7 vote to initiate a debate at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on the serious consequences of the US blockade on the island’s population.
The motion denounces the increase in pressure from the US government in the last few months, with new genocidal unilateral measures violating human rights, and having serious consequences, affecting the supply of medicines, fuel, and essential products.
The document states that these actions, boosted by the administration of US President Donald Trump and implemented by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, aim to “create a humanitarian crisis” in the Caribbean nation, which “represents a challenge for the international community.”
The initiative approved by the Cariati City Council on Friday “seeks to defend the humanitarian principle that no people should be deprived of access to medicines, food, energy, and essential goods as a result of a US economic blockade.”
